Reviews, Comments & Podcasts

See below for reviews and podcast information about Being Free: On the Inside.

My first podcast interview was November 9, 2023 with Valerie Cartonio of the Prison Pod Podcast.  It went an hour and we had a great chat about the book.  I read several excerpts and enjoyed meeting her.  Listen now on Buzzsprout.

Not exactly what I expected – much more cerebral. I find myself wondering how much of it is true, and hoping that it is.

The writing is wonderful. Characters are believable and likeable, except for those not meant to be.  I’m looking forward to the next installment. Thanks so much for inviting me into the process.

J. D. NEESON

An intriguing and moving account of a man striving to understand, transcend and atone for the damage that he did to himself and to society while, at the same time learning how to survive at the notorious Maine State Prison.

Being Free is a good book, a book that makes you want to keep reading to find out what’s going to happen next. For me that’s the most important part. Do I care about the people? Do I believe they are or could be real? Do I want to see what they are going to do next? In this book my answer to all of these questions is “Yes.”

It’s a good book and a brave book. A book that had me thinking about the lessons learned by the people I had read about and how those lessons fit with what I’ve learned in my own long life with its many ups and downs. I was impressed that there were some new lessons too. A change of perspective that woke me up to a few of my blind spots. I’m looking forward to sequels because I want to know more about these Being Free people.

JEANNIE AMIRAULT

An interesting and thought provoking story of a young, educated man of privilege, who finds himself thrust into the Maine prison system for a crime he readily admits to – how he is helped by a fellow prisoner and how he reconciles his guilt with his reality is the real story here – you will want to know what he does with what he has been shown.

JACINTA WILKINS-BLODGETT

I enjoyed the flow of the narative and how it kept me engaged.  The subject matter of the spiritual journey, especially the potentially triggering heavy content, and how the author was able to traverse it delicately yet firmly, was captivating.  I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed slipping between the covers of a good book.
